Zarumilla is in Tumbes, Peru's northernmost region, just a few kilometres from the border with Ecuador. The land here is low and flat, and the map shows a regular street grid spread across it. The town gave its name to the brief 1941 conflict between Peru and Ecuador, often called the Zarumilla War. Inland, the land is farmed, with rice fields and irrigation channels leaving their own geometric marks.
