Zhangye lies in the Hexi Corridor of Gansu province, the narrow strip of fertile land between the Qilian Mountains and the desert that carried the Silk Road westward. The city grew as an oasis fed by the Hei River, and its core is a compact, fairly regular grid centred on a crossroads, with irrigated fields and wetlands spreading around it.
Unusually for a city on the edge of the desert, Zhangye has extensive wetlands just north of the centre, now protected as a park with lakes and reed beds. In the old town stands the Great Buddha Temple, which houses one of the largest reclining Buddha statues in China, dating from the Western Xia period.
Beyond the city lie the Zhangye Danxia landforms, where layers of coloured sandstone form striped hills that attract visitors from across the country.
