Zhovti Vody, whose name means yellow waters, lies in the north of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. The town grew around iron and later uranium ore mining, and its layout reflects that twentieth-century industrial history: wide avenues, regular residential blocks and industrial sites set slightly apart from the housing districts.
The small Zhovta river runs through the area, and reservoirs and ponds along the valley break up the street pattern with open water. Around the edges of town, mine infrastructure and flattened ground show up as large empty shapes, a contrast to the ordered rows of apartment buildings closer to the centre.
