Basildon Map Poster & Print
Basildon was designated one of Britain's post-war new towns in 1949, built to house families moving out of London. The plan joined several existing settlements, including Pitsea, Laindon and Vange, into a single town. On a map this history is easy to read: separate neighbourhoods of curving roads and cul-de-sacs, linked by fast distributor roads and roundabouts, with a planned town centre near the middle.
The town sits between two major routes into Essex, the A127 to the north and the A13 to the south, and its road network is shaped around them. Green space is woven throughout, from playing fields between estates to the wooded slopes of the Langdon Hills in the southwest. To the south, towards Pitsea, the land flattens into marshes and creeks leading down to the Thames estuary, where Wat Tyler Country Park sits.
A Basildon map poster shows a town that was designed rather than accumulated, and that makes for an unusual print. The neighbourhood clusters form distinct patterns, the main roads act as a frame, and the parks and marshes add open space. For people who grew up here, the map is instantly familiar, down to the loop of their own estate.

Langdon Hills
The high wooded ground in the southwest breaks up the housing with nature reserves and country park land, one of the few hilly areas in south Essex.
Pitsea marshes
South of Pitsea, the streets give way to creeks and marshland on the edge of the Thames estuary, where Wat Tyler Country Park occupies the waterside.
