Wolio fortress
The walled keraton of the former Buton Sultanate crowns the hill above the town. Its long, irregular perimeter is the most distinctive shape anywhere on the map of Baubau.

Baubau Map Poster & Print
Baubau lies on the south-western coast of Buton Island in Southeast Sulawesi, facing the narrow waters between Buton and Muna. From above, the town follows the shore in a band. Harbour piers and coastal roads form its outer edge, and neighbourhoods rise gently inland onto higher ground. A small river reaches the sea near the centre, and the streets thin out quickly where the land becomes wooded and uneven.
Baubau was the seat of the Sultanate of Buton, and its most striking map feature is the old keraton on the hill above the centre. The Wolio fortress was built of stone and encloses a wide area within a long outer wall. It is often described as one of the largest fortresses of its kind in the world. On a map its outline shows up as an irregular ring among the newer streets.
Ships moving between the eastern and western parts of the archipelago have stopped here for a long time, and the port is still central to daily life. A Baubau map poster keeps the fortress, the town and the water in one view. The fortified hilltop sits above, the settlement runs along the shore below, and the strait lies beyond, with the coast of Muna not far across.

The waterfront
Piers, coastal roads and harbour buildings line the shore facing the strait. Together they form the busy lower edge of the town, where most of its movement and trade happen.
The strait
The narrow channel between Buton and Muna gives the map a strong band of open water. It is a reminder of how much Baubau has always looked toward the sea.

Miért Baubau?
Egy térkép, ami jelent valamit
For people from Buton, Baubau is where the island meets the rest of Indonesia: the harbour, the market and the old fortress above it all. A map of the town is a quiet way to keep that close, whether at home or far away.
You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example with a family name or an important year. Then choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Paper and Sand both suit the coastline, and Noir gives the fortress outline more contrast.
