Market town core
The oldest streets meet near the historic centre, forming an irregular network that reflects centuries of trade and contrasts with the more planned areas around it.

Braintree Map Poster & Print
Braintree lies in north Essex, and its map shows several layers of growth. At the centre, older streets converge on the historic market area, following routes that go back centuries. Around them, twentieth-century housing estates form looping cul-de-sacs, while the A120 bypass sweeps past to the south. The River Brain runs along the western side of town, with Bocking and its long streets extending to the north.
Braintree was historically a centre for the wool and cloth trade, and later for silk, with the Courtauld family's mills playing a major role in the town's development. Today it is also known for the large outlet shopping village beside the bypass. The town of Braintree in Massachusetts takes its name from this Essex original.
A Braintree map poster reads like a history of English town planning: an irregular medieval core, straight Victorian terraces, then modern estates with their curving streets. The river adds a gentle natural line, and the bypass frames the composition. It is a detailed, rewarding map for anyone who knows the town and its many neighbourhoods.

River Brain
The small river that gives the town its name runs along the western side, a quiet, curving line bordered by green space and older mill sites.
A120 bypass
The bypass sweeps around the south of the town in a long, smooth arc, a strong modern stroke that frames the drawing and connects Braintree to Stansted and Colchester.
