Chesham lies in the Chiltern Hills of Buckinghamshire, in a narrow valley cut by the River Chess. From above, the town stretches along the valley floor, with the old centre and High Street in the bottom and newer residential streets climbing the slopes on either side. Beech woods and farmland close in around the edges.
The town is known as the northern terminus of the Metropolitan line. Chesham station is the furthest point on the London Underground from central London, reached by a single-track branch through the countryside. On the map, the railway enters from the east and stops short in the valley, a small detail with a good story behind it.
