River and canal
The meandering Ems and the straight Dortmund-Ems Canal run near each other. The contrast between their curved and straight lines is the defining feature of the map.

Lingen Map Poster & Print
Lingen, in the Emsland district of Lower Saxony, stands on the Ems River not far from the Dutch border. On a map, two waterways run close together past the town: the natural, winding Ems and the straight, man-made Dortmund-Ems Canal. Near them lies a compact old centre whose streets gather around a historic market square.
Around that core the plan opens out into residential districts, industrial areas and green corridors, with the railway crossing through. The Lingen map poster shows how the historic centre, the postwar growth and the waterways fit together in one frame. The canal gives the image a firm straight line against the softer curve of the river.
Lingen is known as an energy town. The Emsland nuclear power station on its outskirts ran until 2023, and the area is now associated with gas and hydrogen projects. It is also a university town, home to a campus of Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences, which brings students into the centre.

Market square core
The old town forms a tight knot of streets around the central market square. Its fine texture stands apart from the more open districts around it.
Green edges
Parks, woodland and farmland frame the built-up area. They leave open space around the town and give the poster room to breathe.
