Mandi sits at a point where the Beas river bends through a narrow valley in Himachal Pradesh. On a map, the river is the dominant form, a broad pale curve with bridges crossing to the far bank, and the town fills the available land in a dense, irregular web of lanes that climb away from the water.
The terrain is steep, so roads switch back and forth up the hillsides, and the town stretches along the valley rather than outward. A tributary stream joins the Beas here, adding another line of water, and the main highway toward Kullu and Manali follows the river through town before continuing north.
