Marmande stands on the right bank of the Garonne in Lot-et-Garonne, in the broad valley between Bordeaux and Agen. The old town sits on higher ground above the river. Its streets form a compact, irregular core that contrasts with the looser suburban blocks and roads spreading across the valley beyond.
The Garonne dominates the southern side of the map, wide and gently curving, with a bridge carrying the road to the opposite bank. The Canal de Garonne runs through the valley nearby, a straight engineered line set against the river's natural meanders. The main railway along the valley also passes through the town, adding another long, steady stroke.
The town gives its name to the Marmande tomato, a ribbed variety grown widely in France and elsewhere, and summer brings a festival devoted to it. A Marmande map poster shows the setting behind that reputation: a market town on a fertile river plain, drawn in clean lines with plenty of open space.
