Micheng is the seat of Midu County, in the Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture of western Yunnan. Like many towns in this part of the province, it lies in a bazi, a flat basin surrounded by mountains, where the level ground supports farming and the town. Dali and Erhai Lake lie to the north-west.
On a map, the basin makes the town's shape. The built-up area sits on the flat floor, with older streets at the centre and newer districts in more regular blocks around them.
