Portishead lies on the south shore of the Severn Estuary, a short distance west of Bristol. On a map the town is framed by water on one side and a wooded ridge on the other. Streets run along the lower ground by the shore and climb onto the slopes, while the estuary edge breaks into small headlands, including Battery Point.
The town's former dock, once used by shipping and power stations, has been redeveloped as a marina surrounded by new housing. From above it shows as an enclosed basin with a lock to the estuary and a pattern of fresh streets around it. Portishead is also known well beyond the town as the name of the Bristol band that helped define trip-hop.
