Compound pattern
Blocks are made up of household enclosures joined by narrow sandy lanes. Repeated across the town, they create a fine, even texture on the map.

Sh'īarīah Map Poster & Print
Sh'īarīah lies in East Darfur, in western Sudan, on the broad semi-arid plains that stretch across the region. From above, the town is a low, spread-out grid of compounds, which are household enclosures separated by sandy lanes. There are a few wider roads leading in from the surrounding countryside, and there is a market area at the centre.
Settlements in this landscape are shaped by distance and climate. Roads arrive from far across the plain, and seasonal watercourses and scattered trees mark the land outside the town. On the map, streets end in open ground without transition, and the edges of the town look soft and irregular.
A Sh'īarīah map poster is a personal object, meant for people who come from the town or have family there. Its simple, repeated pattern of compounds and lanes reads with surprising clarity in black and white.

Roads across the plain
A few longer routes lead out of town across open country. They are the town's lines of connection to the wider region.
Open Sahel edges
There is no hard boundary: the streets simply stop and the plain begins. The contrast makes the town read as a single, compact shape.
