Abaré is a town in the north of Bahia, in the Brazilian sertão, on the right bank of the São Francisco River. The region is semi-arid and covered in caatinga, dry scrubland, and the river is the element that makes life and farming possible here.
On the map the São Francisco dominates: a wide river with sandbars and islands, running along the edge of town. The streets form a compact grid close to the water, with a few roads leading away across the dry landscape towards neighbouring towns. Beyond them the land opens out into long, quiet space.
