Okhotsk coastline
The sea forms the northern edge of the town in a long curve. In winter, this coast fills with drift ice, which is Abashiri's most famous seasonal sight.

La mappa
Abashiri Map Poster & Print
Abashiri is on the northeastern coast of Hokkaido, facing the Sea of Okhotsk. On a map, the coastline curves along the northern edge of the town, and the harbour has its breakwaters and piers. The Abashiri River runs through the centre, connecting Lake Abashiri, which lies just inland, to the sea. The main streets follow the river and the shoreline.
Abashiri is best known for two things. The first is drift ice. In winter, sea ice arrives from the north and fills the coast, and icebreaker cruises take visitors out onto it. The second is Abashiri Prison. Its historic wooden buildings are now an open-air museum, and the prison itself has become part of Japan's popular memory. Mount Tento rises above the town, offering a view of the sea and lakes.
An Abashiri map poster combines sea, river and lake in one frame. It shows a northern town at the meeting point of these three bodies of water, with a clean, cold-feeling geometry that works very well in monochrome.

River to lake
The Abashiri River runs through the town centre from Lake Abashiri to the sea. It is a short, clear link between the inland lake and the coast.
Harbour works
Breakwaters and piers extend into the sea from the port. Their straight, angular lines contrast with the natural curves of the coast and the river.

Perché Abashiri
Una mappa che ha un significato
People who have seen the drift ice, visited the prison museum or grew up in eastern Hokkaido will find a map of Abashiri very evocative. It is a place that stays in the memory because it feels so far north.
You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates, for example with the date of a winter trip. Then choose one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Noir suits the northern winter especially well.
