Tidal flats
Wide, shallow flats and marshes line the coast and give the island a soft, feathered edge rather than a hard shoreline. This is especially clear at larger print sizes.

La mappa
Akimiski Island Map Poster & Print
Akimiski Island lies in James Bay, off the western shore near the mouth of the Attawapiskat River, and is the largest island in the bay. Although it sits close to Ontario, it belongs to Nunavut. The island is low, flat and uninhabited. On a map it appears as a broad, gently rounded shape, with wetlands, small lakes and winding streams across its interior.
Wide tidal flats and coastal marsh make up much of Akimiski's shoreline, so its outline is softer and more irregular than a rocky island's. The island is a federal migratory bird sanctuary used by large numbers of geese and shorebirds. Polar bears come ashore here in summer once the sea ice has gone, and the Cree of the surrounding coast have long used the island for hunting.
An Akimiski Island map poster offers a quieter subject than most: no roads and no towns, just a broad island with a delicate coastline and the open bay around it. In black and white, the wetlands and streams become fine, organic linework, a good fit for anyone drawn to northern landscapes and conservation.

Perché Akimiski Island
Una mappa che ha un significato
Akimiski appeals to people from the Cree communities of the James Bay coast, to biologists and bird banders who have worked there, and to anyone who admires the wide, quiet spaces of the far north. It feels more like a landscape drawing than a map.
