Eastern caldera
A wide summit caldera dominates the eastern part of the island. Its rim is traced by tight contour lines that give the map a clear focal point.

La mappa
Anatahan Map Poster & Print
Anatahan is one of the Northern Mariana Islands, a US commonwealth in the western Pacific, and it is essentially the summit of a volcano. From above it forms an elongated oval running east to west, with a large caldera taking up the eastern half. There are no roads and no town, only contour lines, crater rims and a narrow fringe of coast.
The small population was evacuated in 1990 because of the volcanic risk. In 2003 the volcano produced its first recorded eruption, and more activity followed over the next few years. Ash reshaped the slopes and stripped the vegetation. The island has stayed essentially uninhabited since, and it is still watched from the larger islands to the south.
Anatahan is also known for a strange episode after the Second World War. A group of Japanese survivors held out here until 1951, unaware of or unconvinced by the end of the war, and their story became a 1953 film. An Anatahan map poster reduces all of this to the pure geometry of a volcano.

Roadless terrain
There are no roads or permanent settlements, so the island appears as pure topography. It is an unusual subject that reads almost like a scientific drawing.
Steep coast
Slopes run steeply down to the water on nearly every side. This leaves little shoreline flat enough for landing and gives the outline a smooth, compact form.

Perché Anatahan
Una mappa che ha un significato
It appeals to volcano enthusiasts, readers of Pacific history and anyone with a link to the Marianas. The print has no streets to decode, just the form of a mountain rising from the sea, which makes it an unusually clean piece of wall art.
