Angul sits on the undulating plateau of central Odisha. It is a district headquarters whose street plan grows outward from an older market core along the main roads. From above, the town is loosely built, with wide gaps of open ground, ponds and fields between neighbourhoods, and forested hills visible towards the edges of the region.
The wider area is one of the most industrial landscapes in eastern India. The Talcher coalfield lies close by in the Brahmani valley. Large plants, including the aluminium smelter of NALCO, have their own planned townships with regular grids and rail sidings. Angul gives its name to the district, which reaches from farmland to dense forest and includes part of the Satkosia gorge on the Mahanadi.
