Aparecida lies in the valley of the Paraíba do Sul in the state of São Paulo, between the cities of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. It grew around devotion to Our Lady of Aparecida, whose small statue, by tradition, was found in the river by fishermen in 1717. Today the town is Brazil's most important pilgrimage destination.
The Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida, one of the largest Catholic churches in the world, dominates the town. On the map, its complex of buildings, car parks and open spaces appears as a broad, clearly defined zone. The older town streets climb the hills nearby, and the river curves along the edge.
