La mappa

Apolda Map Poster

Apolda lies in eastern Thuringia, roughly between Weimar and Jena. The town sits in gently rolling country, with its centre on lower ground and the streets rising slightly towards the edges. The old core is compact and irregular, as in many central German towns. Industrial-era streets and later housing surround it in wider, more regular blocks.

The town is known for two traditions. For centuries it was a centre of bell casting, and its bell museum reflects that heritage. It was also a knitting and textile town. Apolda is often named as the home of the Dobermann dog breed, developed here in the nineteenth century by Friedrich Louis Dobermann.

An Apolda map poster shows a town of manageable scale. The historic centre sits at the heart, railway lines cross the plan, and the land opens into fields beyond the edge of town. The railway viaduct is one of its clearest landmarks. It is a well-balanced composition with plenty of detail and no clutter.

01

Historic core

The old town has a tight, irregular street plan around its central squares. On the poster it forms a detailed cluster at the centre of the frame.

02

Railway viaduct

The railway crosses the valley on a tall viaduct. On the map its straight line cuts across the curving streets below.

03

Industrial belt

Former textile and industrial areas surround the centre in larger blocks. They record the town's manufacturing past in the shape of its streets.
