La mappa
Arnhem Map Poster & Print
Arnhem lies where the Nederrijn, the Lower Rhine, sweeps past the edge of the Veluwe. From above, the river forms a wide, confident curve along the south of the centre, crossed by a small number of long bridges. North of the water the ground rises, which is unusual in the Netherlands, and the streets loosen into parks and wooded estates such as Sonsbeek.
The city's name is tied to September 1944, when Allied airborne troops tried to hold the road bridge here during Operation Market Garden. That bridge, rebuilt after the war, now carries the name of John Frost, who led the British force defending it. Arnhem is also the capital of Gelderland and home to the Netherlands Open Air Museum.
An Arnhem map poster balances water, city and green space. The Rhine gives a strong horizontal line, the compact centre sits just above it, and the northern neighbourhoods thin out into parkland and forest. South of the river, the newer districts spread across flatter polder land, so each bank has a different texture on the page.

John Frost Bridge
The road bridge fought over in 1944 crosses the river directly from the edge of the old centre, its long straight line easy to pick out.
Parks to the north
Sonsbeek and neighbouring estates open up the northern part of the city, where streets give way to looping paths on higher ground.

Perché Arnhem
Una mappa che ha un significato
Some hang Arnhem for its river and its green northern hills, others for the history of 1944 or a family connection to it. Either way, the plan works as a calm piece of wall art, with the Rhine giving the design its structure.
