Athis-Mons lies in Essonne, south of Paris, on the edge of the plateau that looks down over the Seine valley. On a map the town is shaped by a strong difference in level. The eastern side follows the Seine, near where the smaller Orge river joins it, while the western part rises toward the plateau and the large open area of Orly airport.
The town grew from old villages into a residential suburb, and the street network shows that history: winding roads following the slope, older lanes near the valley and more regular housing estates on the higher ground. Railway lines run along the valley floor, and major roads and the airport form clear boundaries to the west.
