Azul stands on the open pampas of Buenos Aires province, about three hundred kilometres south-west of the capital, and its map shows the classic plan of Argentine towns founded in the nineteenth century: a regular grid of square blocks centred on Plaza San Martín, with broad avenues framing the core. Around the edges, the grid dissolves into farmland divided into large rectangular fields.
The Arroyo del Azul, the creek that gave the town its name, cuts across this order, curving through the city past the municipal park and the riverside bathing area known as the balneario. Its meandering line is the one natural element in an otherwise geometric plan, and it gives the poster a soft counterpoint to the straight streets.
Azul began as a frontier fort in 1832 and later became an important regional centre. It is known for buildings by the architect Francisco Salamone, including a dramatic cemetery gateway, and for its devotion to Cervantes, celebrated with an annual festival.
