Bath sits in a deep bowl of the Avon valley in Somerset. From above, the river curves through the lowest ground, and the streets rise on all sides in terraces that follow the contours of the hills. Few English cities have such a distinctive street plan: curved rows of houses, circles and crescents stand out clearly from the ordinary grid.
The whole city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, both for its Roman baths, built around natural hot springs, and for its eighteenth-century Georgian architecture. The Circus and the Royal Crescent are among the most recognisable urban forms in Britain. Pulteney Bridge carries shops across the Avon beside a curved weir.
