The Mississippi
The river forms the western boundary of the city with a wide, sweeping curve, and the Interstate 10 bridge crosses it just south of downtown in a long straight line.

La mappa
Baton Rouge Map Poster & Print
Baton Rouge stands on a bluff along the east bank of the Mississippi, and from above the river dominates the western edge of the map, broad and gently curving. The downtown grid sits close to the water, with the State Capitol at its northern end. From there the city spreads east in a mix of grids and suburban curves, crossed by interstate highways.
The Louisiana State Capitol, completed in the 1930s under Huey Long, is the tallest state capitol in the United States, and its grounds form a clear open shape by the river. South of downtown, the campus of Louisiana State University, with its quadrangles and University Lake, creates a distinctive area of green and water on the map.
The city's name comes from the French for red stick, recalling a marker early explorers noted on the bluff. A Baton Rouge map poster shows how the Mississippi, the capitol district and the university lakes shape a city that has long been both a port and a seat of government.
