Benthuizen is a village in South Holland, part of the municipality of Alphen aan den Rijn and close to Zoetermeer. It sits in classic Dutch polder country, and the map shows this with unusual clarity. Long narrow fields stretch away from the village, divided by parallel ditches that form a fine, regular pattern of lines.
The village itself is compact, with an older core along its main street and newer residential neighbourhoods laid out around it. Beyond them the land is flat and open, crossed by straight roads, drainage canals and the occasional dyke. The polders here were reclaimed from peat and water, and every line on the map reflects that careful management.
