Bilbeis lies in Sharqia governorate, where the green, irrigated land of the Nile Delta meets the desert to the east. On a map the town is a compact, dense knot of streets. Around it lies an intricate web of canals, drainage channels and field boundaries that is typical of the delta, and the settlement stands out clearly against the farmland.
Its position on the eastern side of the delta has long made Bilbeis a stop on routes linking the Nile Valley with Sinai and the lands beyond. It is one of the older towns of the region. Today it serves as a local centre for the surrounding villages and farms, with roads and rail connecting it toward Cairo and the Suez Canal zone.
