Market Place and castle
The broad Market Place opens directly onto the gateway of Auckland Castle. The link between the town and the bishops' seat is still obvious on the modern map.

La mappa
Bishop Auckland Map Poster & Print
Bishop Auckland is a market town in County Durham, on high ground above the meeting of the River Wear and the River Gaunless. That setting shapes its map. The historic centre gathers around a broad Market Place on a ridge, and streets drop toward the rivers on either side. Beyond the castle, the open expanse of Auckland Park stretches away from the town.
For centuries Auckland Castle was a residence of the Prince Bishops of Durham, which gave the town its name and its standing. The castle and its grounds have been restored and opened as part of a wider heritage project that includes galleries and the Kynren open-air show. To the north, the Newton Cap Viaduct, a former railway viaduct that now carries a road, spans the Wear.
A Bishop Auckland map poster shows a town whose layout is still clear on paper: market place, castle, park and rivers, all closely related. The green space of the park balances the dense streets of the centre, and the valleys of the Wear and Gaunless give the composition natural edges. It suits anyone with roots in south Durham.

Auckland Park
The former bishops' deer park spreads beyond the castle, a large open area of woodland and paths crossed by the Gaunless. It forms the calmest part of the print.
Newton Cap Viaduct
North of the centre, the former railway viaduct crosses the Wear valley on a line of stone arches. It now carries road traffic high above the river.
