Blenheim sits on the wide, level Wairau Plains near the north-east corner of the South Island. Two small rivers, the Taylor and the Opawa, curve through and around the town centre. Its street pattern is mostly low-rise and regular, and it gives way quickly to long rectangular paddocks, many of them planted in vines.
It is the largest town in Marlborough, which is New Zealand's biggest wine region and is known internationally for Sauvignon Blanc. The regular dry, sunny weather that suits the vines also explains the plain's orderly look. Irrigated blocks and shelterbelts fill almost every direction beyond the suburbs.
A Blenheim map poster reads as a meeting of two patterns. The town has short blocks and a handful of greens and squares, while the plain around it is made of the long, parallel strokes of vineyard rows and farm roads. The rivers link the two with loose, looping lines.

Beyond the suburbs, the Wairau Plains are divided into long rectangular blocks. Their rows and shelterbelts give the outer parts of the map a fine, combed texture.
