Bray sits on the Irish Sea just south of Dublin, in County Wicklow, and its map is dominated by the sea front. A long, straight promenade runs along the shingle beach, with the town's Victorian terraces behind it, while the Dargle river enters the sea at the northern end and the harbour sits beside its mouth.
At the southern end, Bray Head rises steeply above the water, its slopes traced by paths and the cliff walk that leads to Greystones. The railway, now part of the DART line, follows the coast and cuts through the headland in tunnels. James Joyce lived in Bray as a child, and the town appears in his work.
