Line of lode
A long diagonal band of mine sites and mullock heaps runs through the city along the ore body. It breaks the grid and gives the map its defining line.

La mappa
Broken Hill Map Poster & Print
Broken Hill stands alone in the far west of New South Wales, with hundreds of kilometres of semi-arid country around it. Its map is a clear, orderly grid on flat ground. A long band of mine workings and waste heaps cuts diagonally through the middle of the city, following the ore body. Few places show so plainly on paper how a town and a mine grew up together.
The line of lode was found in the 1880s. It proved to be one of the world's richest deposits of silver, lead and zinc, and it gave rise to the company that became BHP. The streets carry that history in their names: the main street is Argent Street, and others are named after minerals and chemical compounds. In 2015 Broken Hill became the first Australian city on the National Heritage List.
A Broken Hill map poster makes the most of the contrast between the regular city blocks and the rougher shapes of the mining land. The city keeps South Australian time rather than Sydney time, a reminder of how far it is from the coast. In black and white the plan looks almost like a technical drawing, which suits a place built on mining.

Mineral street names
Argent Street and its neighbours, named after minerals and compounds, form the central grid. The everyday street plan is tied directly to the geology beneath it.
Outback edge
The streets stop abruptly where the open country begins, so the city sits as a sharp rectangle of lines within a wide, almost empty field.

Perché Broken Hill
Una mappa che ha un significato
Broken Hill draws people who worked the mines or grew up in the Silver City. It also draws travellers who crossed the outback and remember reaching its grid of streets after hours of empty road. The plan is distinctive, strongly geometric and closely tied to Australia's industrial history.
Personalise the title and subtitle, add the years you lived or worked there, and adjust the coordinates line. Pick Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Sand suits the outback especially well. Download 300 DPI files for $9 or order a print from a local partner.
