Brookline is a Massachusetts town almost surrounded by Boston, and its outline is unusual: a long wedge pushing in between Allston, the Fenway and Jamaica Plain. Beacon Street crosses the northern half as a wide boulevard carrying Green Line tracks down its centre. Coolidge Corner forms a dense knot of shops and apartment blocks where Beacon meets Harvard Street.
Farther south, the grid loosens. Lanes wind over the hills around large estates, the Country Club and Larz Anderson Park, and streets follow contours instead of straight lines. Along the eastern edge, the Riverway and Olmsted Park trace the Muddy River as part of the Emerald Necklace. Frederick Law Olmsted designed that park chain and ran his practice from a house in Brookline.
The town is also the birthplace of John F. Kennedy, and his childhood home on Beals Street is preserved as a national historic site.
