Calcutta is a settlement in Mpumalanga's Lowveld, in the Bushbuckridge area between the escarpment and the Kruger National Park. From above it looks nothing like a gridded town. Roads branch and wander across open ground, and plots are spaced widely enough that the land between them shows through. The pattern follows use and terrain more than any planner's ruler.
The name often surprises people who know only the Indian city, and the contrast shows on paper. There is no dense core here and no river running through a centre, just a low-density network that thins out towards the bush on every side. A handful of main roads carry most of the traffic.
