Carmel lies just north of Indianapolis in Hamilton County, and its map has one feature you notice immediately: roundabouts. The city has built well over a hundred of them, more than almost any other place in the United States, replacing signalised crossroads with small circles at intersection after intersection. From above, the main roads look like strings of beads.
The Monon Trail, a former railway line converted into a walking and cycling path, runs north to south through the centre. Around it, Carmel has built a compact downtown with an arts and design district and the Palladium concert hall. The White River forms part of the eastern edge of the city.
