Carolina lies in the south of Maranhão, on the east bank of the Tocantins River, directly opposite the town of Filadélfia in the state of Tocantins. The river is the dominant line of the map, wide and gently curving. The town's grid of streets runs down to meet it, with the older quarter closest to the water.
Carolina is best known as the gateway to Chapada das Mesas National Park, a landscape of flat-topped mesas, sandstone cliffs and waterfalls. The Itapecuru falls and Pedra Caída are among the most visited sites in the area. On a map, the park's rivers and escarpments give the surroundings a rugged, branching texture quite unlike the orderly town.
