Cartago stands at the northern end of Colombia's Valle del Cauca department, where the La Vieja River runs along the edge of the city toward the Cauca. From above, the centre is a regular grid of blocks around the main plaza. Newer districts extend across the flat valley floor, and roads lead north toward Pereira and the coffee region.
Jorge Robledo founded the city in 1540 on a different site, near present-day Pereira, and it moved to its current location in the 1690s. Today it is known across Colombia for hand embroidery, a craft that supports many local workshops. One of its best-known buildings is the colonial Casa del Virrey, named, according to local tradition, for a viceroy who never came to live in it.
