It lies in a broad valley of the northern Mexican desert, with mountain ranges rising on either side. The town is small, but its position on the main routes through the region gives it a clear place on the map.
The street layout is largely regular, with blocks arranged in a grid around a central area and newer neighbourhoods expanding toward Monclova. Major highways pass nearby, forming straight lines across the flat valley floor.
