Catende lies in the Zona da Mata of Pernambuco, the band of rolling hills inland from the coast where sugar cane has been grown for centuries. The town sits in a valley, and on a map its streets follow the lower ground and the river, climbing a little way up the slopes on either side.
Catende is best known for its sugar mill, the Usina Catende, which was once among the largest in Latin America. The mill and its rail lines shaped the town's growth, and its large industrial footprint still stands out from the surrounding streets on the map.
