Cergy-Pontoise was built from the late 1960s as one of the new towns around Paris, joining the old town of Pontoise with Cergy and neighbouring communes. Its map is shaped by the Oise, which makes a wide meander here, and by planned districts laid out on the plateau above the river, with curving streets, roundabouts and large green spaces.
At the centre of the loop lie the leisure lakes of Cergy, former gravel pits now used for swimming and water sports. Facing them, the Axe Majeur by Dani Karavan runs for about three kilometres from the Cergy-Saint-Christophe district down toward the river. Pontoise, the older town on its hill, was painted many times by Camille Pissarro.
A Cergy-Pontoise map poster is unusual among French cities: rather than a single medieval core, it shows a looping river, open water and several planned centres linked by boulevards and a railway line.
