Chester-le-Street sits on the west bank of the River Wear, and its map is shaped by the river and the old Roman road that became its main street. Front Street runs north to south through the centre, with terraced streets branching off on both sides and climbing gently from the valley.
The East Coast Main Line crosses the town on a tall viaduct, and on a poster the railway makes a clear, straight line through the curving streets. East of the river lie the Riverside cricket ground, home of Durham County Cricket, and Lumley Castle on its hill above the water.
The town grew from a Roman fort, and for over a century in the Middle Ages it was the resting place of St Cuthbert's body, brought here by the monks of Lindisfarne before they settled in Durham. A Chester-le-Street map poster shows those layers in a simple, readable form.
