Choudwar lies in Odisha on the north side of the Mahanadi, across the river from the old city of Cuttack. The river here is broad and braided, split into channels by sandbars that change with the monsoon. The town spreads back from the bank in a mix of dense older lanes, planned industrial colonies and fields.
Choudwar developed as an industrial centre, with mills and factories built close to the river and the rail line. Its closeness to Cuttack means the two places are tied together by bridges and roads, and the Mahanadi between them dominates any map of the area.
