Ciénaga Grande
The great lagoon fills much of the western side of the map. Its shoreline, broken by channels and mangrove edges, reads beautifully in black and white.

La mappa
Ciénaga Map Poster & Print
Ciénaga lies on the Caribbean coast of Colombia, in Magdalena Department, at the north-eastern edge of the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta, a huge system of coastal lagoons. The town is laid out as a regular grid of blocks. The sea lies close on one side and the wetlands open to the west, so many of its streets end abruptly at water.
The town is remembered for the 1928 strike of banana workers that ended in a massacre near the railway station, an event later echoed in Gabriel García Márquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude. Its old centre keeps buildings from the republican era. Roads lead from here to Santa Marta and, across a narrow strip between lagoon and sea, toward Barranquilla.
On a Ciénaga map poster the grid is crisp and orderly, and the lagoon and its channels spread out as loose, organic forms. The contrast between the measured town and the open marshland makes a striking composition, especially in monochrome, where water and land separate cleanly and every shoreline is drawn with a single clear line.

Coastal road
The route toward Barranquilla crosses a thin strip of land between lagoon and sea, a narrow line with water on both sides.

Perché Ciénaga
Una mappa che ha un significato
Ciénaga carries a weight of memory, in history and in literature, and for families from the Magdalena coast it is simply home. A map of its grid and lagoon is a quiet way to keep that place present.
Add a title in Spanish or English, a meaningful date or a family name in the subtitle, and your own coordinates line. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, depending on how light or dark you want the water to look.
