Colmar lies on the Alsatian plain between the Rhine and the Vosges mountains. On the map, the historic centre is a compact, irregular knot of narrow streets, surrounded by a ring of wider boulevards where the town walls once stood. Beyond that, later districts spread out in a looser pattern, and to the west the land begins to rise toward the vineyards.
The Lauch river and its channels run through the southern part of the old town. The district known as Petite Venise follows the water, with half-timbered houses lining the banks. Colmar is also home to the Unterlinden Museum, which holds the Isenheim Altarpiece, and it was the birthplace of Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, the sculptor of the Statue of Liberty.
