Cuenca is in Castilla-La Mancha, and its historic centre occupies a long, narrow ridge between the gorges of the Júcar and Huécar rivers. The old town follows the spine of the rock, with one main line of streets climbing toward the top, and the steep drops on either side are unmistakable on a map. The historic walled town was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.
Cuenca's best-known sight is the Casas Colgadas, the hanging houses built out over the edge of the Huécar gorge. Across the gorge, the San Pablo bridge links the old town to the former convent on the far side. The cathedral on the Plaza Mayor is one of the earliest Gothic cathedrals in Spain.
Below the ridge, the modern city spreads over flatter land to the south and west, in a more regular pattern of blocks and avenues. A Cuenca map poster brings these two parts together: the tight, linear old town and the newer grid, separated by the curves of two rivers.
