Blackstone River edge
The river runs along the town's western side, and its curves form one of the clearest lines on the poster. The older neighbourhoods and mill sites sit tight against it.

La mappa
Cumberland Map Poster & Print
Cumberland sits in the far northeastern corner of Rhode Island, and on a map its western edge is set by the Blackstone River. The town's older centres grew along that water. The mill villages follow the river valley in a loose chain, and the land to the east opens into a thinner net of country roads, ponds and wooded ground.
The town has an unusual history. The area belonged to Massachusetts until 1747, when a boundary settlement moved it to Rhode Island. In the nineteenth century the Blackstone's current powered textile mills, and villages such as Valley Falls and Lonsdale grew up around them. That industrial past still shows in the dense clusters of streets that hug the riverbank.
A Cumberland map poster shows both sides of the town. On one side are the compact mill-era blocks near the river. On the other are longer, curving roads crossing the higher ground toward Diamond Hill. In black and white you can see how the town grew outward from the water, one village at a time.

Mill villages
Valley Falls, Lonsdale and the other former mill settlements appear as small, dense knots of streets, each built around the industry that once ran on river power.
Diamond Hill country
Toward the north and east the street pattern loosens into long rural roads and scattered water bodies around the Diamond Hill area. The page gets quieter here.

Perché Cumberland
Una mappa che ha un significato
Cumberland is a place people come home to over generations, and a map of it keeps the mill villages, the river and the family street all in one frame. It suits a hallway or a study, and it makes a thoughtful gift for someone who grew up along the Blackstone.
You can change the title, add a subtitle such as a moving-in date, and edit the coordinates line. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, then download the $9 HD files or order a matte print, framed if you like.
