Cyprus is the third-largest island in the Mediterranean, and its shape is easy to recognise. The main body is broad and compact, and a long, narrow peninsula, the Karpas, reaches out to the north-east like a handle. Two mountain ranges frame it. The Troodos massif rises in the south-west, and the narrow Kyrenia range runs along the north coast.
Between them lies the Mesaoria plain, and in its middle is Nicosia. The old city is enclosed by sixteenth-century Venetian walls in an almost perfect circle, with pointed bastions around the edge. The Green Line, the United Nations buffer zone, runs through it and across the island, dividing the south from the north.
Along the south coast of a Cyprus map poster are Limassol, Larnaca and Paphos. There are also two areas still under British sovereignty, Akrotiri near Limassol and Dhekelia near Larnaca. The Akrotiri peninsula encloses a large salt lake. In the north, Kyrenia's small horseshoe harbour sits below the mountains.

A long, narrow strip of land running north-east toward the tip at Cape Apostolos Andreas. It gives the island its panhandle shape.
Akrotiri salt lake
A large salt lake on the southern peninsula near Limassol, within the British base area. On the print it is a broad, open shape surrounded by roads.
