Dewas lies on the Malwa plateau in western Madhya Pradesh, about 35 kilometres northeast of Indore. The city's plan centres on a steep hill in the middle of town, the Tekri, crowned by temples to the goddesses Chamunda and Tulja Bhavani. Streets of the old town cluster around its base, while newer colonies and industrial areas stretch out along the main roads.
Dewas has an unusual history. It was once divided between two princely states, a senior and a junior branch of the same ruling family, each with its own palace and administration. Today it is also known for its Bank Note Press, one of the places where India's currency is printed, and for a large industrial area along the Agra–Bombay road.
