It is a compact island of bare, rounded hills and terraced slopes, with a coastline of bays, beaches and rocky headlands. Its settlements are few and small, so the map is drawn mainly by the shape of the coast and a light network of roads and footpaths linking the villages.
The port village of Stavros sits on a sheltered bay, where the ferries arrive and most of the island's life is concentrated.
