Dülmen lies in the western Münsterland, in flat, open country of fields, hedgerows and scattered farmsteads. From above, the town has a clear centre where the old core once stood, ringed by later residential districts and crossed by the railway lines that meet here. The land is so level that roads run in long, calm lines, and the map has an even, measured quality.
The centre was almost entirely destroyed in the Second World War and rebuilt afterwards, though a few older structures survive, including the Lüdinghauser Tor gate. Dülmen is widely known for the wild horses of the Merfelder Bruch, a herd that has lived for centuries in a protected area west of town. The religious mystic Anna Katharina Emmerick also lived and died here.
