Edmonds lies on the eastern shore of Puget Sound, north of Seattle in Snohomish County. The shoreline runs almost straight from north to south here, so the map gets a clean vertical edge of water. Behind it, the town climbs uphill in a mix of gridded blocks and curving residential streets that follow the terrain.
The ferry to Kingston leaves from the downtown waterfront, and its route makes the Sound part of everyday life in Edmonds. Next to the terminal are a marina with long breakwaters, beach parks, and an underwater park popular with divers. The compact walkable downtown sits just above the water, close to the rail line that runs along the shore.

Long protective breakwaters enclose the harbour south of the ferry, making a crisp geometric shape against the open water of the Sound.

East of the shoreline the grid bends to follow slopes and ravines, so the street pattern changes texture as it climbs away from the water.
